Another common foot problem we see in my office is the bunion
or "bump on the big toe joint". This problem is most likely
hereditary and usually progresses with age and gets more painful
and more difficult to treat. The bunion can progress from gradual
to more sudden. The "bump" gets larger and the joint becomes
more arthritic and misaligned as time goes on. Patients have
difficulty fitting into their normal shoes. The shoes bulge and
are stretched by the pathologic joint and the patient's foot
experiences pain and pressure. This pressure from the shoe may
accelerate the problem. If treated early, and the bunion joint is
still in good condition a minor surgery may be used to file down
the outside of the bone and eliminate this "bump" in the bone.
Procedure may also help avoid more involved surgery later on.
This minor procedure is also done right in the office. After the
procedure the bump is gone and most patients do very well and
walk much more comfortably. This procedure may be scheduled
on a Friday, rest over the weekend, and on Monday or Tuesday
most patients can return to work in a post operative shoe. This is
one of the most common problems we see in the office.
A painful incurvated ingrown toenail can be both a
sharply and naggingly painful problem. The toenail plate
begins to grow in an incurvated shape because of many
factors including external pressure from a shoe. Tight
shoes or pointy shoes (such as high heels) will often
cause or aggrevate this problem. This incurvated shape
causes extra pressure on the surrounding tissue and
eventually
the tissue breaks down and bacteria invade the irritated tissue and cause an infection with an
abcess. An infected ingrown toenail can develop into a serious health problem if left untreated.
Prompt attention by a physician is very important. Usually treatment involves removal of a small
piece of toenail, cleansing of the infected area and antibiotics.
A common problem that we see in my office is the painful
"pinky" toe. This problem is caused by a bump in the toe bone
which causes a painful corn/callous to grow on the toe. This pain
is made worse by tight fitting shoes. Temporary treatment
involves shaving the corn/callous down and applying dispersion
pad. A better more permanent treatment we perform for this
painful toe problem is the removal of a small piece of bone from
the toe. This minor procedure involves only a few stitches and is
done right in the office.
Recovery time is usually quick, about a week in a protective shoe. This usually greatly reduces pain
and often eliminates this problem and the corn/callous completely. After the toe has healed most
patients walk more comfortably in normal shoe gear. This same problem can occur on other toes as
well.
Warts commonly occur on the foot. A wart is caused by your
foot coming into contact with a virus. Once inside your tissue
the goal of the virus is to grow and spread as soon as possible.
This is how a virus lives in your tissue and it's only purpose in
life-survival. The virus gets into the tissue and grows and then
spreads into other nearby tissue. Once it spreads now you have
two areas that must be treated. Incidentally, if you touch it with
your fingers it can get on your hand and then it can go
anywhere your hand
goes onto other areas of your body. This problem is contagious. This problem requires prompt
attention. We treat this problem in our office by removal with a C02 laser. Warts are very difficult to
eliminate and may require more than one treatment
